Healthcare compliance has long been associated with being tedious, bureaucratic, and burdensome. For decades, it was framed as a necessary evil: a checklist of rules that impeded innovation and frustrated researchers. But in 2026, the narrative is shifting. Compliance is “six seven”! What did I say?

Upon learning that “six seven” was named the Word of the Year by Dictionary.com, I began investigating it. My 10-year-old granddaughter knows the hand gesture, so I should, right? According to Dictionary.com, the meaning is complicated. Some say it means “so-so,” or “maybe this, maybe that,” especially when paired with its signature hand gesture, where both palms face up and move alternately up and down.1

And maybe that is the beauty of six seven. It is not just a shrug or a hand gesture; it is a reminder that compliance itself lives in the space of “maybe this, maybe that.” Sometimes it is strict rules, sometimes it is flexible frameworks. Sometimes it feels like a burden, sometimes it unlocks innovation. In 2026, compliance is both the tension and the balance, the push and the pull. Like the gesture, it moves up and down, adapting to the rhythm of research and regulation. That is why calling compliance “six seven” is not just slang; it is a metaphor for resilience, agility, and the art of navigating uncertainty with integrity.

We are on the cusp of technological transformation. AI and machine learning are now embedded in compliance systems, enabling seamless, and proactive monitoring. Instead of waiting for audits or penalties, research institutions can identify risks in real time and correct issues before they escalate. Data integration across networks allows compliance officers to see the whole picture instantly, reducing duplication and freeing researchers to focus on discovery. Compliance has become a driver of trust and collaboration, not just a box to tick.

What will we see in the coming months? A global harmonization of standards or regulations backed off with reduced friction? Will we empower individuals to participate in research through digital health? Will institutions and companies compete more or less? Our challenges remain, and at times, compliance is so-so. However, by balancing innovation with regulation, you can leverage resources through inventive solutions, such as shared compliance platforms that facilitate collaboration.

Expectations continue to evolve, pushing organizations to stay agile. Because they spark ingenuity, each challenge is an invitation to do so. Healthcare compliance in 2026 is not just about rules; it is about shaping the future of research, regardless of what comes, with integrity, transparency, and resilience. That is why compliance today is some of this, and some of that! Or six seven!
